Sinks are produced in stainless steel, plastic coated pressed steel, fire clay, and plastic acetyl. Sinks can be single drainer, double drainer, single and basket and double sink with single drainer. They’re designed to take a 11/2 ‘slotted waste’.
The deeper the depth of the sink bowl, the better to accommodate a washing up bowl or sink cage.Taps for the sink can be mono block or pillar style. Pop-up sink waste are available on some models. Most sinks are reversible, so the drainer can be fitted to the left or the right of the sink.
If you are replacing an old sink with a new sink, the replacement sink must be the same dimensions in length and width as the original sink, or it must be larger in size. You cannot replace it with a smaller size sink, without also having to replace the work top the sink is fitted into. This is because the old cut out hole, for the original sink, will be too big to accommodate the smaller sink.
When replacing a faulty sink mixer tap it is sometimes necessary to remove the sink from the kitchen worktop to gain access to the original tap in order to remove it. In this situation, replacing the sink should also be considered.
Faults which occur with sinks are mostly caused by incorrect original fitting causing water leaks or drainage blockages.
